The fruit body is a polypore. It consists of a circular cap, with a slight central depression, atop stem. The cap is always thin relative to its diameter. Mostly the cap is only a few millimetres thick and several centimetres in diameter, but it may be 10 or so centimetres in diameter and about a centimetre thick. It is coloured in shades of brown in concentric bands.

The underside of the cap (again some shade of brown but with no banding) has abundant pores.

The stem is brown and in general no more than a few centimetres in length and a few millimetres in diameter (but larger in both dimensions for those species with the much larger caps).

The fruit bodies have a corky to leathery texture and appear on soil.
