Three possible growth forms.

Stem with a fairly thin cap cap – and pores on the underside of the cap. Rubbery to leathery in texture.

Stemless cap, growing out of wood – and pores on the underside of the cap. Rubbery to leathery to woody in texture. The cap may be quite thick where it comes out of the wood (and then become thinner towards its outer edge) or be relatively thin and of more or less even thickness throughout.

A flat, pored sheet growing on wood, with a soft to woody texture. Some examples of places where you might find such a flat polypore are (1) the lower side of a branch still on on a tree, (2) on a lower side of a sloping tree trunk or (3) on the underside of dead wood lying on the ground.

Ideally, this is a temporary holding pen for photos that will get at least a genus in the future.
